Federal registration data shows more than 130,000 electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles in Ohio, and Titan Electric Services is encouraging Akron homeowners to confirm electrical capacity before installing Level 2 charging equipment.

AKRON, OH, October 13, 2026 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Ohio now has more than 130,000 plug-in vehicles registered, according to U.S. Department of Energy data. Akron-area electrical contractor Titan Electric Services is encouraging homeowners to plan for home charging before a new vehicle arrives in the driveway.

The Department of Energy's Alternative Fuels Data Center reports about 94,200 all-electric vehicles and 37,200 plug-in hybrid electric vehicles registered in Ohio through 2025. The counts are derived from Experian registration data and rounded to the nearest 100 vehicles.

Most electric vehicle drivers charge overnight at home with either Level 1 or Level 2 equipment, according to the agency. Level 1 uses the cordset supplied with the vehicle, while Level 2 equipment runs at 240 volts and delivers a faster charge.

Not every home is ready for the faster option. The Department of Energy notes that some homes have insufficient electrical capacity for Level 2 equipment, and that an electrician can determine whether a home's capacity is adequate.

Craig Brammer owns Titan Electric Services, a licensed akron ohio electrician with offices in Akron and Kent. He said the planning step is often skipped.

"Most of the calls we get come in after somebody has already bought the car," Brammer said. "The better time to have the panel looked at is before, so we can see what's already on it and figure out the cleanest way to get a charger into the garage."

Federal guidance also points to code requirements. The Department of Energy notes that the National Electrical Code treats EV charging as a continuous load, that Article 625 covers most of the requirements for charging equipment, and that local permits may be required.

The company's work on ev charger installation akron projects starts with a review of the home's existing load and a dedicated circuit for the charger.

Homes that need more capacity may be candidates for the company's electrical panel upgrade akron service, which moves a home to 200-amp service and includes coordinating local permits.

"A lot of homes around here were built long before anybody thought about charging a car in the garage," Brammer said. "My advice to a neighbor is simple: know what your panel can handle, and use a licensed electrician who pulls the permit. That one step heads off most of the problems we see."

Brammer noted that breakers tripping repeatedly after a new charger or other large appliance is added are a reason to have the circuit checked. The company's electrician akron team handles that diagnostic and repair work.

Homeowners considering a Level 2 charger can review the Department of Energy's home charging guidance and check local permit requirements before scheduling an installation. Titan Electric Services offers complimentary estimates.
